Frequently Asked Questions
When should I book my session? How do I secure my spot?
The sooner the better! The schedule fills up very quickly especially at certain times of the year so no date is guaranteed until a retainer has been sent to confirm the booking. I only book a limited number of newborns per month, so contacting me early to get your due date in the calendar is recommended.
Newborn sessions take place during the first 5-14 days after birth. Once baby arrives, contact to let me know and we’ll set a date within those first two weeks to get you into the studio. They are only so sleepy, flexible and squishy for so long so the sooner we can get them in the better.
A non-refundable retainer is required to secure your booking.
What happens if I have to reschedule or can’t attend my session?
In the event that a session has to be rescheduled, I make every effort to work with you to find a date that works for everyone involved.
Weather is out of everyones control so outdoor sessions occasionally do get moved.
If it is a mini session you are unable to attend, a reschedule date may not be available and while retainers are non-refundable they ARE transferable to a future session (of any kind).
Where do sessions take place? How long do they take?
Depending on the type of session you are interested in there are lots of options for locations. My cozy in-home studio is located in Waterdown and I generally shoot at local parks in the area when an outdoor session is requested.
I am always open to exploring new locations or even coming to your home, however travel fees may apply.
Sessions typically take 45 mins- 1 hour with the exception of in-studio newborns that average 2-3 hours.
How do I prepare for my session?
Once your session is booked I send out a confirmation email with information pertaining to your individual session, including ideas on what to wear and where to meet. I’m always available to consult or answer any questions you may have.
Newborn sessions do require more specific preparation and a guide is sent along with the confirmation to be reviewed. Some of the steps involve breastfeeding mothers to avoid certain foods 48 hrs prior to prevent gassy baby’s, keeping baby awake before the session, what to expect during the session etc.
What Experience / Training do you have as a Photographer?
While my background is in Social work, I’ve spent my life working with children of all ages including those with special needs.
While some children are very outgoing and energetic during sessions, some can be timid and shy and need time to warm up. I generally schedule extra time for these scenarios and try to incorporate fun games, silly noises, lots of tickles and corny jokes into the session to get everyone comfortable and laughing. I’m not really a “look over here and say cheese” type of photographer although I do try and capture a few shots of everyone looking at the camera at some point. I do suggest to families with young kids to bring a snack or enticement / bribe of some kind to use if needed.
I’ve been working with newborns for 6 years and have spent countless hours on training and workshops with safety being in the forefront. I would never compromise the safety of a newborn just to ‘get the shot’. In some instances I will do a composite image where two or more images are photoshopped together to give a certain effect, but I assure you baby is safe at all times.
I am an Accredited and Qualified Newborn Photographer recognized by APNPI (Accredited Professional Newborn Photographers International) with all necessary safety training.
What happens after our session? How do we choose our images?
Once your session has taken place I go through all the images very carefully, make minor adjustments and create a proofing gallery with all the very best turn outs. (I generally try and weed out all the images that may have someones eyes closed, may not be completely in focus etc.) From here, you select your favourite images for final editing. These images are then fully edited and sent to you in a final gallery for digital download within a few weeks time, where you will then have the option to purchase any prints or products if you choose.
What methods of payment do you accept?
I currently accept Cash, EMT, Personal Cheque's and PayPal.
We also offer gift certificates for the special loved ones in your life that you may want to surprise!
They make amazing gifts for baby showers, birthdays, Christmas etc.
Health? Pets?
Myself and my family are completely up to date with all vaccinations including flu shots and are FULLY vaccinated again COVID 19.
This is important not only for us but for the safety of the babies I handle and photograph in my home especially as most are too young to be vaccinated themselves.
In the event that I am sick, your session will be rescheduled. I encourage my clients to do the same if someone that is attending the session isn’t well. Kids often like to touch the props and play with the toys which can pass germs along to other clients.
I do have a dog friendly home, but keep them in a separate area when clients are visiting. My dogs are not allowed in my studio space.
